Free public teardowns

We tear down a public DTC brand every week.

No email gate. No opt-in. These are real reports built from public storefront data - the same method we use for paid client work. They exist so you can read the shape of the product before you ever spend a dollar.

Ridge Wallet vs. the field

Ridge invented the modern metal wallet category and built a Shopify empire on it. But the field has caught up. We read the public storefronts of 4 direct competitors - Ekster, Trayvax, Dango, and Secrid - to map pricing, catalog structure, SEO positions, and the moves a Ridge operator would want to test next.

Method: Public storefront data only. No logins, no private dashboards, no customer data. We read product pages, collections, sitemaps, meta tags, and visible review patterns. Pricing is as displayed on June 16, 2026.

1. Pricing map

The metal wallet category has bifurcated. Ridge sits at the top of the price ladder. Everyone else is compressing toward the middle - and the bottom is filling with Amazon brands at $19-29 that we did not even include here.

Brand Entry wallet Flagship wallet Keycase / tracker Accessory range Bundle available
Ridge $95 $195 $75-125 $25-80 Yes
Ekster $69 $119 $49-89 $25-55 Yes
Trayvax $29 $139 $35-50 $15-40 No
Dango $49 $179 N/A $12-60 No
Secrid $49 $99 N/A $20-45 Yes
Finding

Ridge charges a 38% premium over the next-most-expensive entry wallet (Ekster at $69 vs Ridge at $95). That premium has to be defended every single day with brand, materials, and proof of durability.

Finding

Trayvax opens at $29 with a minimalist metal frame wallet. That is a 70% price gap from Ridge's floor. Someone searching "metal wallet" lands on both. Ridge needs a visible comparison page or an entry product to intercept that traffic.

2. Catalog gaps

Products present in competitor catalogs that Ridge does not sell. These are demand signals, not a shopping list - each one is a merchandising test, not a copy-paste.

  • HIGH
    Smart tracker wallets

Ekster's flagship product is a wallet with a built-in Find My / Tile tracker card slot and a push-button card fan. Ridge has no tracker-integrated product. Ekster owns this subcategory in search results.

  • HIGH
    Leather + metal hybrid wallets

Dango and Trayvax both sell leather-and-metal hybrid designs (e.g. Dango Dapper, Trayvax leather wraps). Ridge is aluminum/titanium/carbon fiber only. A hybrid SKU would capture the "I like metal but want it to feel warm" buyer.

  • MEDIUM
    Women's-specific wallet line

Ekster has a dedicated women's collection page with smaller form factors, brighter colorways, and different product photography. Ridge's women's offering is a filter on the main catalog - same products, same photography, different copy.

  • MEDIUM
    Modular / swappable faceplate system

Dango's entire product line is built around swappable faceplates and modular components. Ridge sells a fixed product - you pick one finish and you are done. A modular system increases LTV through accessory upsells.

  • LOW
    Gift configurator

Secrid has a dedicated "Gift Finder" quiz tool on site. Ridge has a gift collection page but no interactive configurator. Low lift, high conversion potential for Q4.

3. SEO gap scan

Keywords that at least 2 competitors rank for on page 1 of Google that Ridge does not rank for in the top 10. Estimated search volumes from public keyword tools; treat as directional, not audited.

Keyword Est. monthly volume Ranked by
"smart wallet with tracker" 8,200 Ekster (pos 2), Secrid (pos 8)
"best rfid wallet 2026" 5,400 Trayvax (pos 4), Ekster (pos 7)
"minimalist leather wallet men" 4,900 Dango (pos 5), Trayvax (pos 9)
"groomsmen gift wallet" 3,700 Ekster (pos 3), Dango (pos 6)
"wallet with airtag slot" 3,200 Ekster (pos 1), Trayvax (pos 5)
"slim wallet front pocket" 2,800 Trayvax (pos 5), Secrid (pos 9)
"metal wallet vs leather" 2,100 Dango (pos 4), Trayvax (pos 7)
"wallet comparison 2026" 1,600 Ekster (pos 3), Secrid (pos 8)

4. Demand signals

Sold-out watch

Ekster Modular Cardholder in Carbon Black was sold out at time of scan. Restock flagged for monitoring - if it comes back quickly, demand is strong and Ridge should check whether carbon fiber pricing is competitive.

Review velocity

Dango D01 Dapper accumulated 47 new reviews in the last 30 days. That is the highest review velocity in the hybrid wallet segment. Dango is gaining ground specifically where Ridge does not compete.

Bundle pattern

Secrid bundles wallet + key organizer + money band as a "Complete Carry Setup" at a 22% discount. Ridge's bundles are wallet + keycase only. Expanding the bundle mix increases AOV with no new product development.

Gap opening

Trayvax discontinued their Summit wallet (was $49, leather + stainless steel). The hybrid-leather slot at $49 is now open. Dango's closest product is the D01 at $109 - a $60 gap that could be filled.

5. The moves worth testing

Every teardown ends with actions, ranked by confidence. These are bets, not certainties - and you test the highest-confidence one first.

01 / HIGH

Publish a comparison landing page

Ridge vs Ekster, Ridge vs Trayvax, Ridge vs Secrid. Comparison pages are the single highest-ROI SEO play in the DTC wallet category right now. Ekster and Secrid both rank well for "wallet comparison" terms. Ridge has the brand equity to win these queries but no pages targeting them.

02 / HIGH

Launch a "Tracker-Ready" SKU

Ekster owns the smart-wallet subcategory with 8,200 monthly searches for "smart wallet with tracker." Ridge does not need to build a tracker into the wallet - a dedicated AirTag slot in the existing form factor is enough to compete on those search results and capture the Find My user base.

03 / MEDIUM

Fill the $49-69 entry price gap

Trayvax discontinued their Summit at $49. Dango's entry is $49. Secrid's is $49. Ekster's is $69. Ridge's floor is $95 - no product captures the "I want to try a metal wallet but I'm not spending $100" buyer. A stripped-down entry wallet at $59 would intercept search traffic that currently goes to competitors.

04 / MEDIUM

Build a gift configurator before Q4

Groomsmen, Father's Day, graduate, and corporate gifting are the top four wallet gift occasions. Secrid already has a Gift Finder tool live. Low technical lift - a 3-step quiz -> recommended SKU flow. Ship by October 1 to capture holiday traffic.

05 / LOW

Test a leather + metal hybrid

Dango's review velocity on hybrid designs suggests demand. Ridge's manufacturing likely supports it. A single limited-run SKU (1,000 units, one colorway) tests the thesis without committing catalog space. Kill it if sell-through is under 60% in 90 days.
